Maine VFP Members Participate in Walk for a Nuclear Free Future and Conversion to a Peaceful Economy

The Walk for a Nuclear Free Future and Conversion to a Peaceful Economy entered Maine early Wednesday morning, March 24, in the town of Bethel at the New Hampshire border. Seven from Maine joined the walk at that time. They spent their first night at a church in Norway, Maine and then moved on to Lewiston, Bath, Brunswick, Freeport, Portland, Saco, and Kennebunk. Each night at 6:00 pm a pot luck supper and program were held to honor the walk and hear about its purpose.

The walk is put on by the Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist order of Leverett, Mass. Its aim is to arrive in New York City on the eve of a United Nations session on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The Maine portion of the walk was organized by chaper member Bruce Gagnon who walked the entire Maine route.

Many others joined the walk as it passed through their communities. In all, the walk was a wonderful experience for lots of Mainers. “This walk is about how to get people in New England to join us in the march for nuclear disarmament,” said Tim Bullock, coordinator of the walk and a member of the Nipponzan Myohoji order.

At stops along the route, other Maine VFP members participated in different ways. Doug Rawlings brought eight of his students from University of Maine/Farmington to walk the segment from Lewiston to Bath. They walked the whole way and helped carry the banners and really helped make it a special day. Dan Ellis from Brunswick worked with local PeaceWorks organization to welcome walkers at the UU Church for the pot luck supper and program on the evening of Saturday, March 27. Bob Lezer of Freeport organized the First Parish UCC Church in Freeport for the pot luck supper and program there on Sunday March 28 where the above photo was taken.

I encourage you to go to Bruce's blog for more details and photos of the walk and events around the walk: http://space4peace.blogspot.com/ Scroll down through the text to see updates as the walk progressed.
