June 23 Anti-war demonstration in Bangor
An anti-war demonstration outside the Federal Building in Bangor is being called for June 23. The demonstration, beginning at 10 a.m., will coincide with a visit by concerned citizens from around the state to Senator Collins’ Bangor office. Both in front of the Federal Building and inside Collins’ office, people will read the names of the U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq since March, 2003, and an equal number of Iraqi civilians who have been killed. More than 1,700 U.S. soldiers have been killed and tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians. A statement to Senator Collins will request that she support:
The statement will also request that Senator Collins participate in a town meeting to listen to the concerns of her constituents. Rep. Tom Allen has already agreed to participating in a town meeting. Gulf War Veteran and peace activist Kim Hawkins will participate in the demonstration joined by other members of Veterans of Peace and members of Peace Action Maine, Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space, Peace and Justice Center of Eastern Maine, Veterans for Peace, Peninsula Peace & Justice, Island Peace & Justice, and Midcoast Peace and Justice. Bring your signs and puppets. Bring your friends. Help read the names of those killed in Iraq. The demonstration will last from 10 a.m. to 4 or 5 p.m. If you cannot participate the entire day, come for a few hours at any time throughout the day. The greater our numbers, the more impressive the public display of anti-war sentiment. The Federal Building is located at 202 Harlow Street, Bangor. Come demand the U.S. withdrawal from Iraq and Afghanistan. See you there! Info: Contact Dud Hendrick at 348-2511 or dudhe@verizon.net or Judy & Peter Robbins robbins@downeast.net. Note: Those planning to read the names inside Susan Collins’ office are asked to meet at the Peace and Justice Center of Eastern Maine at 9 a.m., June 23.

TO: All interested SUBJ: An Open Invitation A group of concerned Maine citizens met recently at the Peace & Justice Center of Eastern Maine in Bangor to discuss future events. Inspired by the example of the visitation and ³reading of the names² at Congressman Allen¹s office* in Portland in March, the group is planning a similar action at Senator Collins¹ Bangor office on Thursday, June 23rd. Roughly, the plan calls for a large group to visit the Senator¹s office where a statement will be read, followed by a ³reading of the names² of American service-people who have died in Iraq along with an equal number of Iraqi civilians. Concurrently, others will read the statement and the names to the media and general public outside the Federal Building. The statement will request that the Senator support curtailing funding of the war, a timetable for withdrawal, and support for a Congressional inquiry into impeachable offenses committed by this administration. Additionally, the activists will call for the Senator to participate in a ³town meeting² to listen to the concerns of constituents. We will begin the day with a 9am meeting at the Peace & Justice Center of Eastern Maine at 170 Park Street and then will proceed to the Federal Building (202 Harlow St) with the intention of beginning the visit at 10am. It is anticipated that the entire reading will take more than 5 hours. Participants are encouraged to come for all or any part of the day. Plans are being made to gather for a debriefing/celebration at a local restaurant at the conclusion of the visit and we welcome any and all activists whether able to participate in the day or not. We are also planning similar visits to the MPBN offices in Portland and other congressional offices in the near future. Please come all the more likely to hear us. She must be held accountable for her continued support of the unjust, immoral and illegal war and occupation. * We have a few copies of Pat Wheeler¹s film documentary, Iraqi War Cloth, of the Allen ³visit² that will give you a clear idea of the intended action. If interested in showing this powerful 30 minute film to your group please call (348-2511) or email Dud Hendrick (dudhe@verizon.net).
